In the late 1940s, Burlaky and other Plastuny living in displaced-person communities carved out a winter program in the Bavarian Alps. Early camps ran on the slope called Forderbrand below Jenner near Berchtesgaden. Skis were often improvised, climbs were on foot, and the goal was simple: stay active, stay together, and keep Ukrainian spirit alive.First organized Burlaky ski gatherings took place in Germany starting in 1949. The format mixed daytime skiing with evening Plast programming, a pattern that continues.
