75+ Years of Ski Camp
For more than 75 years, Burlaky have brought Plast youth to the mountains to ski together, build friendships, and strengthen Ukrainian identity. What began on homemade skis in post-war Europe became an annual tradition in the U.S., then grew into the modern Vermont camp you see today.
1940s
Bavaria after WWII
In the late 1940s, Burlaky and other Plastuny living in displaced-person communities carved out a winter program in the Bavarian Alps. Early camps ran on the slope called Forderbrand below Jenner near Berchtesgaden. Skis were often improvised, climbs were on foot, and the goal was simple: stay active, stay together, and keep Ukrainian spirit alive.First organized Burlaky ski gatherings took place in Germany starting in 1949. The format mixed daytime skiing with evening Plast programming, a pattern that continues.
1950s
Coming to America
Burlaky brought the tradition to North America in the early 1950s. Ski events and meetups for Plast youth are documented from 1951. By 1954, Burlaky camps were running in the U.S., including at Marble Mountain in New York, then expanding to other venues as the community grew.

- 1951: American-based ski gatherings begin to appear in Burlaky records.
- 1954: Burlaky ski camps are established in the U.S. on a recurring basis.
What began with homemade skis in Bavaria became a tradition passed from one Burlaky generation to the next.
1960s–2024
West & Gore Mountain
Through the following decades the camp rotated across beloved East-coast venues, notably Soyuzivka and later Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks. Families came back year after year, passing the experience from one generation to the next. Gore’s terrain and community base made it a long-running home for Burlaky.
2025 & Beyond
Vermont Today
Today’s camp runs at Pico Mountain in Vermont, with hotel lodging at Grey Bonnet Inn, daily lessons for all levels, and the same evening Plast programming that has defined the camp since Bavaria. The setup is modern, the mission is the same: ski together, look out for each other, and carry Burlaky camaraderie forward.
